From Hive to Jar: Our Charleston Honey Story
When he was 8 years old, William Helfgott won a raffle for a beehive through his 4H program. Although he and his mom tried to keep them alive for 5 years, they called it quits in 2014.
In 2016, William stumbled upon the supplies in the garage and asked his mom if they could get another hive. He says, "Her response was one I will never forget, 'Sure but it will be your responsibility entirely." After a year of successfully keeping them on his own, the bees had produced more honey than he and his mom could ever eat.
In the summer of 2017, at 15 years old, William set out with a backpack full of honey jars, a bike, and a dream of selling out. 30 minutes later, that dream was a reality, and he was hooked on the beekeeping business!
The following spring, at 16, William was selected to receive a scholarship to become a certified beekeeper in the state of South Carolina. Eventually, he ran out of houses to sell honey to. William then secured his first retailer, The Purple Hull.
Named after the street William lives on, River Bluff Honey was born in June 2018.
During the summers of 2019-2021, William worked on a large-scale beekeeping farm, during which he learned both the business of honey & beekeeping.
William continued to run the honey business throughout college. He graduated from the College of Charleston Honors College with degrees in Finance, Spanish, and a minor in entrepreneurship.
William currently resides in Charleston, South Carolina.
As of 2025, River Bluff Honey has shipped to 40 states, all from one small childhood dream of selling out.
